Germany Packing List for Fall / Autumn: As the ninth most visited country in the world, Germany is also one of the largest countries in Europe. From its splendid urban and vibrant artistic landscapes, breathtaking countryside to its rich cultural heritage, there is something for everyone. Which doesn’t mean packing for Germany in Fall is going to be difficult.

With the superb network of highways and easy access of railways to all cities and towns, tourists can move from anywhere in hours. Thus, whatever place you want to visit, you will surely experience the best of Germany and what it has to offer.

However, apart from the beautiful sceneries and cultural diversity, the weather in Germany is usually moderate all year long and gives all tourists a chance to enjoy their stay. If you are planning to take a trip to Germany and visit the different destinations, it’s vital to know what to pack for your stay.

But first, let’s understand the weather.

What to Wear in Germany in Fall / Autumn

1 pair of boots

  • 3-4 pairs of socks
  • 1 pair of comfy shoes
  • 3-4 pairs of pants
  • 4-8 tops: longer sleeved preferred but you’ll likely be wearing a coat over these anyways
  • 1-2 coats: these tend to take up a bit of space in your luggage so if you want to take a 2nd, pick a thinner material for warmer days
  • 4-8 pairs of underwear
  • 2-4 bras
  • 1 pair of gloves: if visiting closer to winter
  • 1 warm hat / beanie
  • 1 scarf: if visiting closer to winter
  • 1 cardigan, sweater or light jacket
  • 1-2 dresses
  • 1 umbrella (or buy in Germany)

When to visit Germany: Weather and Seasons

When it comes to its weather, Germany enjoys different seasons that go well with its beautiful scenery. To make the seasons more interesting, the country ensures there are several festivals and sports events

What to wear in Spring in Germany (March, April, and May.): Spring is a good time to visit Germany. It is quite cold in March but from April the flowers begin to blossom and temperatures start to warm. Spring is the best time to go walking or take a romantic tour in Germany, with vibrant colours, smaller crowds and moderate temperatures throughout the country.

The temperature usually rises from 40 to 65 F / degrees. To ensure you stay warm, pack a coat /sweater and nice trousers.

What to wear in Summer in Germany (June, July, and August): Everyone loves the summer, and the Germans are no exception. Although the temperature is usually between 65 to 75F /  degrees, it can get really hot some days. On those days the temperature can reach 100 degrees. To avoid sweating a lot, packing light clothes is advisable.

What to wear in Fall in Germany (September, October, and November): Fall or autumn in Germany brings cool weather after the summer temperatures. From the beginning of September, the temperature is low from 40 to 50 F /degrees. It a great time to visit the cities when the crowds will be smaller, but also a great time to see the Bavarian Alps.

Since this season brings about rain, it is best you carry some warm clothes alongside the light ones. A light rain jacket will be a good option here.

What to wear in Winter in Germany (December, January, and February): If you are a ski lover, winter season is the best time to visit Germany. Even if the season is officially recorded to start in late December, the temperature has already started dropping drastically by November. The average temperature is usually 23 to 40 F degrees.

Although snow is common, there are some places that miss out on it. However, there is still rain, wind and freezing temperatures all over. To always stay warm, pack enough warm layered clothes and shoes. Find the winter packing list here.

Popular Day Tours & Sightseeing in Germany

Berlin

  • Day trip to Museum Island and visit the five museums that house a collection of arts and sculptures as well as the spectacular Ishtar Gate and appealing Roman Market Gate of Miletus.
  • Buy a hop on, hop off pass to get around easily to see the sites
  • Walk along the Berlin Wall and take dozen photos at the photo automat.
  • Go on a private photography / photoshoot tour in the city
  • Ride a bike in the city square as you enjoy Berlin.

Munich

  • Visit the Neuschwanstein Castle and explore extravagant towers turrets, frescoes and throne hall.
  • For a more amazing experience, you can explore the Linderhof Palace within Munich or visit a toy museum at Marienplatz.
  • For a deeper amazing experience, you can visit the Frauenkirche Cathedral and take some pictures with the legendary footprint situated there.

Rhine Valley Tour

  • Take a river cruise and enjoy the incredible Rhine Valley. Apart from that, you will be able to pass the famous Loreley Rock. The cruise will also dock at one of the riverside restaurant and give you the chance to enjoy some wine tasting.

Dresden

  • If you are into art and stunning architecture, visit Zwinger Palace and enjoy seeing the remarkable sculptures.
  • Buy a hop on, hop off bus ticket to see all the sites.
  • To have a taste of opera music, the Semper Opera House is widely recognized all over the country. It is home of the Saxon State Orchestra and the Semperoper Ballet.

Procession of Princes

  • If you want to take pictures with the largest mural in the world then Procession of Princes is the place to visit. It is located on the outer wall of the glamorous Stables Courtyard of Dresden Castle.

Frankfurt

  • To enjoy some delicious food and window shopping, Frankfurt city square will offer you that and much more. The square is also home to some magnificent historical buildings such as the Old Town Hall.
  • If you are interested in the constructions of churches, the city also hosts some of the oldest churches in Germany.
  • Apart from the old buildings, Frankfurt has managed to build skyscrapers making it the leading business city in Germany and earning the nickname “Mainhattan”. The Frankfurt Book Fair is also situated here as well as excellent museums located all over the city.

    1. Hi Debbie, I haven’t been to either of those place sorry. If the weather is similar to Germany in those months, you’d probably be okay following this Germany packing list. I can’t imagine there’d be too many differences 🙂
