Slovenia packing list: The country of Slovenia is well-known for its delicious coffee, gorgeous lakes, and Ljubljana. However, there are many other things to see and do in this small country. Located in the Alps, it offers travelers stunning scenery and natural beauty.

Slovenia is also known for its rich history and culture, which is preserved in towns like Piran along the Adriatic coast. In order to get the most out of your trip to Slovenia, well atleast packing wise, read on for my Slovenia packing list.

In a hurry? Here are my 3 must haves for what to pack:

Why?: (#1) A light rain jacket doesn’t take up too much room, but helps you from getting caught out when it rains.

Why?: (#2) There are many different brands available but a set of wireless headphones are amazing for long bus or train journeys.

Why?: (#3) Having a lens cloth is so important yet its often left off packing lists. They’re cheap to buy and can save your photos from random smudges.

What to Wear in Slovenia

1-2 Hats: In summer you’ll want a cute hat to protect you from the sun. In winter opt for a woollen beanie or something else warm.

1-2 Scarfs: Bring a scarf in winter, and for the colder months in spring and fall.

1 Light rain jacket: Slovenia has 151 days of rain a year which can happen in any season, so make sure you have a waterproof poncho or light rain jacket incase you’re caught outside in a downpour.

1 pair of gloves: A winter must have, but not really needed in the other months. These gloves are a good option.

2-3 pairs of thermal socks: again, something relevant in winter only.

1-2 Coats: For winter, and the colder months of spring and autumn, a warm coat is a must. I opted for a full length, woollen trench and was comfortable.

1 pair of sneakers or hiking boots: (optional) only really needed if you plan on doing a lengthy or adventurous hike.

2-5 pairs of socks: if bringing sneakers.

1-2 pairs of shoes: in summer I recommend sandals, in spring and fall – flats, boots or sandals depending on the weather, and in winter – a pair of cute boots.

1 pair of water shoes: These are optional but you may find them handy if visiting a lot of waterfalls as the ground can be a bit harsh.

1-3 sweaters or cardigans: in summer, opt for something light.

A pair of sunglasses

1-2 pairs of leggings: a great option for the shoulder seasons, and in winter if you get too cold you can make these your base layer.

1 -2 pairs of Pajamas

Daily underwear

3-5 bras

1-2 swimsuits

Winter outfits: In winter I recommend 2-4 pairs of warm pants, 4-8 tops (majority should have a longer sleeve), and 1-2 dresses with warm stockings to go underneath.

Summer outfits: For summer, pack 2-5 bottoms such as skirts or shorts, 4-8 tops, and 2-4 dresses.

Fall and Spring: 2-5 pairs of long pants or warmer bottoms (check the temperatures), 1-3 dresses and 4-8 tops. If visiting in colder months and you want to wear a dress I’d strongly recommend investing in some warm tights / stockings.

What Technology to Bring

Laptop + Charger (optional): I would forgo this if you plan on staying in hostels, but I always take my laptop with me when staying in hotels so I can curl up with a movie at the end of the day.

Camera & lenses: There are so many different types of cameras on offer, but I’d recommend either a Sony mirrorless camera (light weight) or a Nikon SLR. In Slovenia a wide angle and 35 or 55mm lens will be your best option.

Camera charger and a spare battery: I always pack 1-2 spare batteries, especially in winter as the cold drains your battery faster.

Phone and charger

Drone: If you already have one I’d recommend bringing it, and a spare battery.

2-3 memory cards: 16 or 32gb memory cards

A universal adapter: so you can use your electronics in Slovenia. Americans will need to check if they also need a currency transformer.

Headphones

Portable charger for your phone

Lens cloth and spray: for cleaning your camera

Cosmetics, Toiletries & Beauty to Pack for Slovenia

Solid shampoo or travel sized versions of liquid shampoo & conditioner: If you bring liquid items, give yourself the extra piece of mind by wrapping them in a plastic bag or a case. Shampoo is great, but its not all-over-your-clothes great.

Moisturizer: essential in winter to keep your skin from drying out. I recommend getting a travel sized version of your favourite brand.

Deodorant

Toothpaste and toothbrush

Tweezers

Bandaids

Razor: pack this bad boy in your checked luggage.

A medicine kit: for common ailments. Just a few items as if you run out you can find extra medicine in Slovenian pharmacies.

Prescriptions: if you use prescription medicine make sure you take the prescription with you in case you get asked about it.

Sunscreen: a good moisturiser / sunscreen combo will work nicely in summer and on sunny days in the shoulder seasons.

Makeup: Whatever you feel comfortable with, but you probably don’t need 6 different lipsticks. *I can personally vouch for this as a former overpacker*

Insect repellent: if doing a bit of hiking

Hair ties: I can guarantee you will loose half of these so bring a full set.

What other items to take to Slovenia

Bank cards: I recommend taking at least 2 so you have a backup in case one gets lost.

A day bag

Umbrella or plastic poncho: particularly handy if traveling in September or October.

Small handbag or clutch: perfect for nights out. Otherwise, you’ll be find with a day bag.

A lock: if you’re staying in hostels you may have to supply your own lock for the lockers.

A microfibre towel: a good lightweight towel will come in handy if you’re planning to swim in some of the country’s beautiful waterfalls.

When to Visit Slovenia: Weather and Seasons

What to pack in Spring in Slovenia (March, April, May): As the snow defrosts and greens start to return, spring brings in warmer temperatures to Slovenia. In saying that though, you’ll probably still want to have a coat and enclosed shoes handy. Rain can occur often in Spring, and in some places there can even be the chance of flooding.

Don’t let that deter you though, you’ll still have majority sunny days with options to go hiking or just wander around. Daytime temperatures average 5-20C (41-68F). In spring you’ll want to treat March similar to winter in what to pack – think gloves, a warm coat and long pants. However as you inch towards May you’ll find yourself comfortable in dresses and lighter clothing.

What to pack in Summer in Slovenia (June, July, August): Summer is when the entire country starts to open up, with nearly all of Slovenia’s attractions opening. Summer can bring some rain, although its unlikely to happen too often. Expect average daytime temperatures between 20-27C / 68-79F during summer, which is warm but still quite comfortable.

For a summer packing list for Slovenia you’ll do well in shorts, dresses, skirts, tanks and a light cardigan or sweater for the evenings.

What to pack in Fall for Slovenia (September, October, November): Slovenia becomes colourful in fall as the greenery puts on a show before the harshness of winter. In fall / autumn in Slovenia, temperatures will average around 2-22C / 36-71F, depending if you’re closer to winter or summer.

In September you’ll still be comfortable in shorts or a dress, while in November, you’ll want to be bringing some winter gear with you such as a scarf and a long coat

What to pack in Winter in Slovenia (December, January, February): Packing for winter in Slovenia means finding extra room in your suitcase for warm pants and coats. Snow peaks in January but you can find it throughout winter in many places. A warm hat, scarf and gloves are a must in winter, and you may want to look into thermal socks to keep your feet warm.

Average temperatures are around -3 to 6C / 26-42F.
